HANDHELD TORCH FOR EX-TRAFIRE® SD AND HD CUTTING SYSTEMS

A few years ago the Thermacut® Group decided to develop an original brand and its own products. Originality is a term that sounds good and it is nice to talk about it, but on the other hand it forces the creators of new products to surpass known limits and to look for new technical solutions for technology that has been known for more than 70 years. The plasma torch is an important component that defines how quickly and how well we can cut, what the costs related to the operation of plasma system will be, and if the client will be satisfied.

Let's look at the torch handle, a key part that fits in the puzzle of the whole torch set. Unlike the machine torch, the manual torch and its handle enable the designers to implement their ideas and to apply their creativity. In our case, we have asked our designer to design our new torch, the FHT-EX® 105TT.

The torch is not only be attractive in appearance, but also provides a comfortable grip and control to help the operators do their best work when cutting in various positions. The torch grip allows the operator to use the classic way of holding the torch in a closed palm, as well as offering an option to guide the torch with the thumb held up. See the pictures of various grips below. We have collaborated with our test technicians as well as with specialists of our affiliated company Abicor Binzel® in evaluation of the grip quality. Finally, we asked operators and welders to assess the handle ergonomics.

It is obvious from the text above that it is not easy to be the creator of original products for the brand, and the development of such products takes time and costs money. That is why we have decided to protect the handle design with a design patent. Our design protection is registered with the European community design patent under the number 007959432-0001.

The design patent protection can be extended for 25 years in total. But we will have other torches and these torches will eventually be replaced with a new generation of plasma torches.

PACKAGE CONTENT OF EX-TRAFIRE® SETS

Each plasma cutting system has some specific content. For your convenience, here is an overview of the individual sets and how they are assembled.

EX-TRAFIRE®30H

This is the only plasma power supply with a fixed FHT-EX®30H torch and a cable with a length of 4 m and a work cable with a length of 6 m. Of course, the set includes a user manual in English and a starter kit of consumable parts (the “starter kit”).

EX-TRAFIRE® 40SD

This set always includes a 40SD plasma power supply, FHT-EX®40 manual or machine torch chosen by the client, with a cable of the required length (4, 5, 7.5 or 15 m), work cable, torch latch (inserted in the TCS connector slot in the power supply), a “starter kit” based on the torch type (manual or machine), and user manual.

EX-TRAFIRE®45SD

This set always includes a 45SD plasma power supply (offered with 1x120-230 VAC or 3x400 VAC supply), FHT-EX®45TT manual or machine torch chosen by the client, with a cable of the required length (5, 7.5 or 15 m), work cable, torch latch (inserted in the TCS connector slot in the power supply), a “starter kit” based on the torch type (manual or machine) and user manual.

EX-TRAFIRE® 55/75/100SD

This set always includes a 55/75/100SD plasma power supply (for 55SD and 75SD, offered with 3x400 VAC or 3x220 VAC), FHT-EX®105RTX manual or machine torch chosen by the client, with a cable of the required length (8 or 15 m), work cable, torch latch (inserted in the TCS connector slot in the power supply), a “starter kit” based on the torch type (manual or machine) and user manual.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES OF EX-TRAFIRE® PLASMA POWER SOURCES

Thermacut® EX-TRAFIRE® plasma power sources feature many advantages, and we are proud of them. In this article we briefly present some of the main advantages over competing products.

INTEGRATED GRID MODE

All our power sources feature an integrated GRID mode which means automatic switching between the pilot arc and the main arc. There is no need to push a switch to turn on the main arc again when the torch is positioned to cut the material.

HIGHER POWER SOURCE OUTPUT

For example, thanks to its “extraboost” feature, the EX-TRAFIRE® 75 and 100SD plasma sources can supply input torch voltages up to the value of 220 VDC. The higher the voltage between the electrode and the cut material, the longer the arc will run without being extinguished or switched to the pilot arc. This enables cutting in hard-to-reach areas and cutting material of greater thickness than with power supplies of competing suppliers. The output power is not only related to the maximum current, but also to the voltage that the power supply can provide. A formula based on Ohm's law is valid: P= V × I (power output = voltage x current)

100% DUTY CYCLE

The duty cycle (DZ) of a plasma power supply is one of the basic parameters that expresses the ratio of maximum possible cutting time to the total working time without any power supply overheating.

EX-TRAFIRE®75SD features 100% duty cycle, which makes it a flagship not only among our power supplies but even among competing power supplies. They usually feature only 80% duty cycle at full power.

LOW WEIGHT

Our power supplies are considerably lighter. The EX-TRAFIRE®75SD weighs only 24 kgs! The competing power supplies weigh about 32 kgs.

SAFETY ELEMENTS

The EX-TRAFIRE® power supplies feature many safety elements. Cheaper competitors do not have these safety elements.

  • Self-check after system start-up. The power remains disconnected until the power supply operating system checks for any possible defects.
  • Torch safety elements include a “Cap sensor”, checking for short-circuits between parts, checking for torch switch pressed when the power supply is turned on, etc.

GOUGING FEATURE

EX-TRAFIRE®75SD and 100SD offer a gouging feature. It is used for material preparation before welding and removal of defects or old welds.

The EX-TRAFIRE® SD series is a professional series of plasma power supplies suitable for full service in industrial production. It cannot be compared in any way to cheap plasma power supplies made for occasional cutting (low duty cycle etc.) that are sometimes offered in various hobby markets or food supermarkets. Such cheap plasma power supplies often have no protection for consumable parts when the arc is ignited by electrode-material contact. This substantially shortens the lifetime of consumable parts and can affect the operator´s safety!
